How to make technology meaningful in the classroom (part 2)

In my last post.... I talked about how to get familiar with the technology in your classroom. It is imperative that you know what types of technology you have in your classroom in order to make it a meaningful experience.

Using Web 2.0 tools in your classroom is the next thing I want to discuss.
Web 2.0 tools are free resources that are found on the internet. Some of the Web 2.0 tools I use are: Twitter, youtube, blogs(www.kidblog.org), google docs, and podcasts (course cast.com). Many of these tools your students are already familiar with. So all you have to do is an educator is begin integrating them in your classroom!!!
Let's begin with Twitter- Twitter is a social media networking website. Twitter can be used as a collaboration tool in your classroom.  Students can sign up and tweet about a class project or a homework assignment. For example: Students can tweet about the state of union address and use #stateofunionmslaneclass everybody who uses the # hashtag can follow the convos via twitter..  Teachers can count the twitter convo as a homework grade. COOL Right???

The first thing as an techno educator is learning how to use technology in your classroom.

Lets start with The "SMART" board......

Teachers might say what is a smart board? Well a SMART board can vary in lengths, shapes, types, colors, brands, and prices!!
According to Wise Geek- A SMART board usually refers to a specific brand of electronic whiteboards made by a company called SMARTTechnologies, but the term is increasingly being used to refer any brand of electronic whiteboard. Usually a smart board looks similar to a regular white board but the difference is that smart boards will allow you to become interactive with them. You are able to project items on the white board ( with a LCD projector, most come installed with the smart board) and they become a multimedia station on wheels.

Many times educators receive "SMART" boards in their classroom by their districts or donations from non-profit organizations but often times teachers are clueless on how to use them. Recently I did a poll on whether or not smart boards were an effective teaching tool. 70% of the surveryers stated that if they knew how to use the technology it would be an effective tool.

How do we use SMART BOARDS?
1. Find out the name of your "smart board"
2. Go to that particular company's website and locate the useful tip page or resources page.
3. Go to youtube and watch demonstrations on how to use certain functions on your smart board
4. Power that baby UP
5. Dont be afraid, mistake are going to be made.
